The subject says it -- I've seen the pd? application macppp and
Versaterm's slip client but are there any slip SERVERS available for the mac
(that would work w/MacTCP, commtoolbox, etc.). The setup would be a centris
650 connected to a 10baseT ethernet connection w/a high speed modem on the
serial port (e.g. 14400). Thanks in advance for any replies (can reply

Subject: 1)Mac compatability with WP-DOS 2)bibliographic software
I am writing with two questions:
1) to request info on bibliographic software for the Macintosh. I would
particularly appreciate info on Reference Manager (Mac version) vs. End
Note (Mac version). I am currently using Reference Manager, DOS version,
and I like it a lot, except for the very irritating feature that the program
allows only one database to be larger than 200 references. I am moving next
month to a new job in Salt Lake City and will be purchasing a Mac, and need
to transfer my Reference Manager (DOS) files to a new program (Ref Manager
Mac or End Note Mac or ?) at that time.
please respond to me privately at the address below because I am not a
member of this list.
2) I would like input on the issue of which word processor on the Mac would be
best compatible with DOS-word perfect files (version 5.1).
I will need to transfer my Word Perfect (DOS) files to a new program (Word
Perfect Mac version or Microsoft Word or ?). I have mostly text-only files,
but also some figures and tables in Word Perfect (DOS) format. I have tons
of these documents, so ease and speed of transfer (as well as accuracy) are
an issue. I also will need to be able to convert my MAC documents back into
DOS Word Perfect documents for compatability with some of my coworkers.
Please respond to me PRIVATELY at the address below, since I am not a member
of this list. Thank you very much.

Subject: 68040 Accelerators for the SE/30 (Q)
We are currently considering to upgrade Macintosh SE/30's with 68040
accelerators. The machines will be used primarily to run Mathematica, a
symbolic
computer algebra system, and to develop and run Fortran programs under MPW and
Language Systems Fortran (number crunching).
In addition to a substantial performance boost for the tasks
described,
compatibility with other applications is an issue. Our SE/30's are running in
various configurations, i.e. networked under Apple Talk or Ethernet to other
Mac's or Unix workstations. One SE/30 has a Xceed video card with internal
grey
scale adapter. In the future, we might want to install a 13" or 16" color
monitor in another SE/30.
Do you have experience with any of the available 040 accelerators?
Specific
data on real-world-performance for tasks similar to the ones described above
and
benchmark results, preferentially compared to Macintosh Quadra systems, will
be
highly appreciated.
(BTW, I was disapointed by the recent review of accelerators in the
April issue
of Mac User which only reported lumped performance figures, didn't provide an
absolute comparison, had very little technical information, and, due to long
lead times, was already partially obsolete at the time of appearance when 040
accelerators were available)
If I receive enough information, I'll prepare a report on high-end
acceleration
for the SE/30.
THE SE/30 WAS A GREAT MACHINE AT THE TIME. I WISH APPLE WOULD SELL AN SE/40
UPGRADE WITH QUADRA-800 PERFORMANCE!
Thank you very much in advance!

Hi fellow netters,
I have this really strange problem.
Whenever I print out something with Adobe TypeAlign 1.05 (whether
it be something processed by it and pasted to another app such as
Word 5.1a or printed directly from the DA), I get a bunch of garbage
as output on the printer (literally...looks like garbage..:-). On
screen, everything looks fine (curved type and the works...:-).
I'm using Adobe Type Manager 3.0 along with an Apple Personal LaserWriter
LS with 7.2 driver software.
I'm doing this on a Quadra 700 (this shouldn't make a difference..
but you never know...).
Anyhow, somebody please help me...because this is getting frustrating...
I've tried all different combinations...with different driver software,
putting the TypeAlign 'loose' in the system folder, in the extensions
folder, with caches turned off, etc.
I have to create curved type for my job.
Thanks in advance.

[ the definitive archive site for the latest version of
MacLayers is RASCAL.ICS.UTEXAS.EDU where you can find
both the latest and the outdated versions of MacLayers.
version 1.0 runs on the Mac 512, version 1.10 requires
at least the 128k ROMs of the 512e model... Of you know
of FTPable sites (or other) which offer outdated versions
to users, please take a moment to contact the site-admin
and ask them to update or, at least, remove the outdated

Announcing MacLayers v1.30
17 May, 1993
Summary
-------
A new version of the MacLayers multi-window terminal emulator for
UNIX systems is available by anonymous ftp to rascal.ics.utexas.edu
[128.83.138.20]. Please access Rascal during off-peak hours. Look
in mac/communications/MacLayers.
The following is an abridged list of the major new features
since v1.20 of MacLayers; for complete information, see the
MacLayers Manual included with the Macintosh side of MacLayers:
* The UNIX side has been ported to run on the following
platforms:
o SunOS (and other BSD hosts)
o Sequent Balance and Symmetry
o IBM AIX Release 3.2 (RS/6000 only)
o SGI IRIX Release 4.0.5 System V
o DEC ULTRIX Release V4.2A
o Apple A/UX v3.0 (requires gcc)
o SVR4 Hosts
o NeXT Software Release 1.0, 2.1, and 3.0
* Support for a UNIX side .layersrc file to automatically
startup and place additional windows when layers mode
is started.
* Separate user settings and logfiles; each can be
saved independently from the other; settings act
as startup documents. Previous combined approach has
been abandoned.
* Improved/reorganized keyboard support. System 7 users
should install the included MacLayers Keyboard in their
System.
* Longer dial strings, mouse support under emacs, new
Finder icons, and more ...
In addition, the Macintosh side MacLayers Manual and the UNIX
side man pages have been updated.
About MacLayers
---------------
MacLayers is a vt100 terminal emulator that allows multiple
terminal windows to be opened to a host simultaneously over a
single serial connection. The remote host computer must be a
UNIX(TM) system which has sockets support. Each terminal window
may be associated with a shell, login to a different host, or an
individual command. Complete facilities are available for
controlling the window and the associated host processes attached
thereto.
MacLayers is free for all to use, but is not in the public
domain. You may not sell MacLayers or any program derived from
it.
* * * * * * *
You will need two files: one containing source to be compiled on a
UNIX host, the other containing the Macintosh application and
documentation. Please read the enclosed documentation before sending
comments to layers-reply@rascal.ics.utexas.edu.
Enjoy!

Subject: Bugs: QT 1.6 vs Now Toolbox 4.0.1p
I just spent a day thrashing with a bug and tracked it down to what appears
to be a conflict between QuickTime 1.6 and the Now Toolbox 4.0.1p. I
mentioned this to DTS only to find that they know about it (found 2 days
after QuickTime 1.6 went final). Too bad no one told me, but I'm going to
tell you so that you don't waste your time like I did.
I don't have specifics and I gather that the QuickTime guys are the only
ones who really understand what is happening, but essentially the bug causes
the System to hang when resolving an alias that mounts a network volume. A
common example is if you double click an alias in the Finder, you log in,
the window displays and then it hangs with a non-spinning watch; or you drag
a file onto an alias and get the login dialog, only to hang there. It would
actually hang the remote machine too. Ugly!
I tracked it down to QuickTime 1.6 and DTS filled in the part about Now
Toolbox. Apparently they don't think this bug will hit many people, but it
hit both my fx and my Quadra 900. Luckily I merely had to revert to
QuickTime 1.5 (I need SuperBoomerang more than QT 1.6 and I use none of the
other Now 4.0 Utilities).
I'm telling you all this for several reasons. One, I don't want you to have
to painfully thrash like I did. Two, I'm hoping a little public awareness
will inspire a fix to either Now Toolbox (which has its fingers in way too
much stuff for my taste) or QuickTime if the problem is more widespread than
they suspect. I would love a simple standalone Boomerang like the old days!
The motto here is, basically, watch yourself. If you upgrade to 1.6, try
opening some aliases before assuming everything went well. Post a note if
upgrading doesn't go well so we can all share in the misery.

Greetings,
Several of us have Centris 650s and are experiencing some
incompatability between the CD Remote utility (it plays audio CDs via the Mac
speaker) while using MacProject Pro.
Whenever an audio CD is playing, MacProject Pro will crash in
different ways. They include Just Quitting, Freezing the Cursor, Application
Unknown has Quit (for various reasons) and One-Way Trip to MacsBug.
MacProject Pro runs fine if an audio CD is not running.
Has anyone else had similar experiences? I'm trying to gather some
more data before whining to Claris. (Unless Claris is listening now?)

Subject: Centris CD ROM Drive - Front Panel (Q)
Greetings,
Does anyone know how to get the CD ROM on a Centris 650 to recognize
the stuff on the front panel? There's a section of the Centris case that
covers the CD drive (except for the slot, of course). If you pop this section
of the case off (there's two plastic clips that hold it on), you reveal 1) an
"access LED" that shows when the drive is being read and when there's a disc
present; 2) an eject button; 3) volume control (presumably for the earphone
jack; and 4) the earpone jack. I can't figger out how to get the earphone
jack and volume control to work and the eject button doesn't work, either.
Any help? I'd like to use earphones for the CD, but don't want to
hear the Mac sounds through them. I don't particularly care about the eject
button.

Subject: Centris CD sound (A)
Hello netters
In Info-mac 11/103 I give a solution for the audio CD recording problem on an
Centris.
Gary Goldberg (og@access.digex.net) tell me a much easier way *direkt*
recording :
>You can use QT 1.6 to record Audio CD tracks
to disk at 44.1KHz/16bit without needing extra equipment. It takes
advantage of a new capability built in to the CD300 and CD300i.
To try this, run any QuickTime program on your Centris like Adobe Premiere,
Simple Player or MoviePlayer. (SimplsPlayer and MoviePlayer can be gotten
>From ftp.apple.com.) Select Open from the file menu, navigate to the
Audio CD (any music CD you've stuck into the CD300) and select any audio
track. It will prompt you for a location (disk) and name to save it
under. There will also be an Options... button where you can determine
resolution (8bit or 16bit), sample rate (11KHz, 22KHz or 44.1 KHz), mono or
stereo, and the amount to be sampled. There are two sliders that let you set
start and stop within the track. Default is to record the whole track.
Selecting Convert will sample and store the audio track as a QuickTime movie
(without
picture obviously).
At this point you can save the sound out if you have a program like Premiere
(which will save the sound as an AIFF file), or use it as is with a QuickTime
movie.
The sound is transferred to the hard drive through the SCSI bus, and it is a
feature of only the CD300s and the similar Sony unit. The resulting AIFF file
(or QT file is you don't convert) can be used anyway you want (SoundEdit will
read it, for instance). I have to warn you that if you select 16bit, 44.1KHz
stereo sound, it will sound fine but the resulting file will be HUGE. Of
course
it will sound much better than the equivalent file captured through a sound
sampling device (like the MacRecorder) because it doesn't have to go 'out' and
then 'in'. >>
Thanxs to all folxs who have mail me!

Subject: Comment on IIvi cancellation
If I might comment on the comment (Digest #104), I think it's important to
remember that different Mac ranges are available in different parts of the
world. Thus in the UK you could certainly buy an LC right up until the
end of last year; they're conceivably still in circulation from certain
authorised dealers even now. Ditto the 68000 Classic. So there's more
continuity in the product line in some places than in others

Subject: converting TT fonts to windoze (A)
Thanks to everyone who made suggestions. I would suggest ftping:
/info-mac/util/TT-converter.hqx
/info-mac/util/font-clerk.hqx
don't look for exactly those file names, it's an approximation.
TT converter seemed to work okay with a few fonts, but when my friend
installed them in his windows system (that worked okay), trying to use
them causes a system crash.
So I tried FontClerk, which required me to install the fonts in my syste,
something I didn't want to do, but it converted them no problem.
So the reliable method is more of a pain, but works fine.
thanks again...

As a frequent Sumex user, I very much appreciate what must have been a huge
effort reclassifying a number of the Info-Mac directories. However, I need
to ask you to go a little further: The "apps" directory is still longer
ythan the entire scrollback limit on NCSA telnet. I would guess this is a
problem for many users, especially as Telnet has one of the longest scroll-
backs in any Mac Terminal package.
Thanks-

Subject: EMERGENCY! DATA RECOVERY HELP NEEDED (Q)
Is it possible to still recover data from a hard drive whose case has been
opened to expose the platters? Can you recommend any particular companies
for data recovery? About how much does it cost?
Steven
P.S. Details of annoying, pathetic story follow:
A friend of mine, not very experienced with her Mac, was having problems
with her hard drive that sounded very much like stiction. She wasn't
comfortable with removing the drive herself, much less banging it on the
table or twisting it. I happened to have an extra 80mb Quantum sitting
around, so I told her to box up her Mac and send it to me, along with her
most recent set of backup disks, and I would swap the drive and restore
her data.
The box arrives and, sure enough, it's stiction. Rather than trying to
bang and twist it into one last boot I swap in the replacement Quantum,
reformat, and everything's cool. While it's doing the install thing I
dissect the old drive: take the circuit board off and open it up. I play
with the head armature, solenoid, motor and stuff, but don't touch the
platters.
Now it's time to restore from her backup disks. Hmmm...even though she
doesn't back up her apps it seems like there should be more than 12 DD
disks for a Redux (uncompressed) backup of a 40mb drive. Sure enough, the
backup contains only her font folder. My friend is a young, struggling,
freelance writer just beginning to fing success. Her entire career's worth
of work, including stories, works-in-progress, contracts, letters, and
contact info is on the platters I have just exposed to the cruel,
unhermetic world.
Say it ain't so. Direct me to a data-recovery service that can restore her
digital life. And please, be careful out there.

Well, my Journals File is neither in the Endnote Folder, nor in the Styles

Dave,
I was experiencing the same thing with Telnet. Error -39's on occasion in
applications after using Telnet. I started downloading to a floppy, instead
of
the hard disk and that seemed to help. I don't use Telnet for downloads
anymore. Just TurboGopher and Fetch. No problems since giving up Telnet.
This goes back a year or so ago, Telnet 2.3 something, IICX, System 7.0,
Tuneup 1.1.1, MacTCP 1.1.

Kevin,
Since there is limited LED error indication on a IISC/NT/NTX I'll
assume it is a IIf/g. If so there are 17 possible indications
therefore it is necessary to know if each LED is either on, off,
or flashing.

Will,
The answer to 1), 2), and 3) is the terminator was designed to
be added to either the cable end or the 2nd connector of the last
device in a SCSI chain. I prefer the latter since it takes some of
the strain off the drive connector. Normally you can get away
without terminating the first device but will need to terminate
if a 2nd or more devices are added because without it voltages
on the SCSI bus will not be within a certain range.

It might help to be a bit more specific on what a 'mindmap' is. If you are
refering to cortical maps then we too have an interest, and up till now
have been using MacDraw or Canvas but they have limitations in dividing an
object into separately fillable sub-objects.
then again maybe you're referring to something quite different.

Would using combinations of 2MB and 1MB simms cause problems over a
protracted period of time, or would the computer simply not work? I've been
using four 2MB simms and four 1MB simms (total: 12MB) in my IIci for about
a year and a half, and while I've had problems with my computer, I've
always assumed they've been software related. Should I go out and replace
my 1MB simms with 2MB simms?

What are the requirements for the file server to boot this lab?

In #104, Rick Sutcliffe inquired about what happened to MacEqn. I doubt
very much that it is still around. It was a great program for its day, but
it badly lacked any meaningful capability to modify already-existing
equations. I myself dropped ME as soon as Expressionist and MathType came
out, and I suppose most others did the same, causing ME to wither away.
Both Expressionist and Mathtype have been extensively developed since then,
and both -- I think -- work under Nisus. They are quite different, thoughm,
and which one to pick is a matter of personal preference. I have used both
extensively, and have finally settled on MT, even though EX gives the user
many more options and much more flexibility. But MT comes closer to my idea
of publication-quality printouts.

Karl, this animal is supposed to sit inline between a video source
and a monitor, or recorder. I put together a system for someone once,
where they were going to be capturing pictures from a video camera
using a image-grabber board in their PC clone, then using some fancy
image-analysis software for some kind of mapping work. The VCP was
supposed to sit between their PC and the computer monitor.
As I recall, there isn't any driver software. When you want to print
out the image on the screen, just press a button on the VCP, and it
spits it out.
I don't know for sure if you could hook it up to a Mac or not. I think it
worked off of a VGA monitor cable (9-pin), so if you had the right kind of
adapter, maybe so.

Subject: NEC CDR-37 Problems
Hi Netters,
I've been trying out an NEC CDR-37 CD-ROM, and having a more than a
few problems. When playing QuickTime movies directly from the CD, I
get lines or bands that travel across the screen from edge to edge.
Some kind of screen refresh problem I guess. I also get frequent
system hangs, and applications that quit unexpectantly.
I'm running a IIci with 8MB of ram, no unusual inits/cdevs or control
panels. The NEC is the only SCSI device, and I'm using the latest version
of the NEC driver (3.06, which I believe is later than the one in the
Info-Mac archives) with System 7.1.
Is anyone else having these problems with this model?
Any clues greatly appreciated.

Subject: Nisus demo site (and is it better than Word)? (A)
Brian Gaeke asks where to find a demo of Nisus, to see whether it's
better than Word.
You can find Nisus demo by ftp'ing to syrinx.kgs.ukans.edu or to
weber.ucsd.edu. I haven't looked recently - it may still be the
version 3.06 demo, instead of the new Limited Flag Edition.
As to whether Nisus is better than Word: I'm a long-time Nisus user
and I find that when I have to use another document processor, it's
very hard to get by without unlimited undos, macros and powersearch.
Even FrameMaker's search/replace capacity is feeble compared to Nisus.
And Nisus has a whole slew of other ease-of-use features that you
can't find anywhere else, as Don Crabb noted in his MacWeek rave
about the program. I also understand that it takes better advantage of
WorldScript than anything else currently available, tho' I have no
personal experience of this.
On the other hand, if you must have a built-in table editor, equation
processor or publish and subscribe, you might prefer to go with Word.
These features are promised in Nisus Writer, supposedly due this
summer. But then it was supposedly due last summer as well.
You should beware of comparative reviews in magazines, especially if
written by Jim Heid in MacWorld. The Mac mags tend to take Word's
feature set as the paradigm and score down other programs accordingly.
Take the Nisus feature set as the paradigm and Word doesn't look so great.
But that paradigm shift will never occur, given the relative sizes
of the advertising budgets at MicroSoft and Nisus Software.

establish a connection to a remote host, say a Sun or a VAX, and communicate
syncronously/asyncronously with the host. If anybody knows of any XCMDs that
will allow me to do this I would appreciate a direct response. Please respond
to:

Thanks!

If one literally does this, and then double-clicks a TeachText
file, will Tex-Edit be recognized as the program to start? If not, what
would one have to (easily) do to change this?

Subject: The location of Thread Manager extension (A)
Hello everyone,
First, I'd like to give my thankfulness to
Mr Darin Takemoto
Mr Glenn Howes(?)
for sending me the directory of Thread Manager extension.
Here's the location of Thread Manager extension.
The directory is in /dts/mac/hacks of ftp.apple.com.
I guess someone else may be interested in it too.
BTW, I want to say sorry to Mr Bill Waits. I tried to mail this directory to
you but just failed to reach your host. Hope you will read this information.

In a recent note in Info-Mac there was a new utility called "Disk Charmer" and
it says in the explanation that it needs the "Thread Manager Extension" from
Apple. I've two questions - what does it do and where do I find it?

Subject: TrueType and non-proportional fonts
Hello everyone. I guess now it's my turn to ask a likely faq -- though
I've scanned the faq's and reports and haven't seen anything about this.
I frequently download output from Unix-based stat packages, and the tables
are usually arranged with spaces, rather than tabs, used to set columns.
These look fine on screen with a non-proportional (aka mono-spaced) font,
both before and after downloading. But when I print on my StyleWriter I
the alignment gets out of whack. It looks like the spaces have a slightly
different width than the other characters (using Monaco; haven't tried
others); or perhaps character in general varies. The columns align
properly if I print with a bitmap font, but then the characters print at
72dpi.
Anyone know of a trueType font (preferably sans-serif) that is consistently
non-proportional? I have ATM (but I'm not using it now), so I guess I
could install it and stick with the bitmaps. Other ideas or suggestions?
I'd rather not have to tabify these documents, but that seems to be the
best option so far.
Please reply to amcc@leland.stanford.edu and I'll summarize if I get
anywhere with this.
Thanks,
----

Subject: upgrade Centris 610 cpu
Dear sirs,
I have a Centris 610 computer with the 68LC040 cpu, and want to
upgrade the cpu to the full 68040. I recall reading an article describing
this upgrade and vendors who could supply the chip, but of course cannot
find it back. Do you know of any vendors who supply this chip and can
provide advice about such an upgrade? The chip is a pin-for-pin
replacement, but there was something about the 68040 requiring a heat sink,
since it ran hotter than the 68LC040. This apparently is not an upgrade
currently offered by Apple or its dealers. I am in the Washington, D.C.
metro area. Thanks for your help.

Subject: ZiffNet/Mac Software (c)
Jonathan Bauer posted an interesting, reasoned and thought-provoking
reply to Adam Engst's recent letter supporting ZiffNet.
Adam Engst's reply was over the top, just because you disagree with
Jonathan on a pretty academic point there's no need to resort to
pejorative language.
>If you violate that
>person's wishes, then you're at best a jerk and at worst in
>violation of law.
Adam, you'd have done better to restrain youself immediately after
posting you apology for not declaring the conflict of interest. Now
I feel that you should at least withdraw the word "jerk" and preferably
apologise a second time. As I see it, this discussion was reasoned, you
introduced the flames.
>This is my last posting on this topic; I have projects more
>constructive than restraining myself from flaming to occupy my
The correspondent supporting Adam fortunately returned to argument
rather than flames. (Unfortunately, at least in my copy, the piece was
"unsigned"). I'd take issue with him/her on a couple of points.
I think that you should follow your own advice and be more careful in
"quoting" law:
> Subject to sections 107 through 120, the owner of copyright
> under this title has the exclusive rights to do and to authorize any
> of the following:
> ...There is no provision for compulsory licensing of software in US law.
> The copyright holder has the "exclusive right" to control distribution.
> "Exclusive" means no one else has right to decide otherwise.
I don't query your interpretation of the word "exclusive", but is that right
absolute. Presumably sections 107-120 deal with extensions AND exclusions,
what did they say?
I suggest that you've also made an incorrect interpretation of the legal
status of the licence.
> The software is only licensed to
> users of ZiffNet's forum; people who obtain it elsewhere are doing
> so in violation of the license, and this is just as illegal as
> getting Microsoft Word somewhere other than a commercial source.
In the hypothetical case of someone posting the software and my down-
loading it I would have done nothing illegal. Ziffnet's gripe would
be with their licensee who did the downloading.
Finally an opinion on copyright law in general. I presume that it's
common ground that ordinary copyright law is complex and computer
copyright law doubly complex. What has attracted our interest to the
ZiffNet case is that we have a situation where the envelope has been
stretched still further. Any opinion expressed, even if it were that of
a copyright lawyer, would be speculative. Here's my speculation.
ZiffNet wouldn't have a chance of enforcing their license.
